Get to know the Unleashing Leaders Change Agents: Ian Toner, Digital Delivery Manager

Interview

Ian Toner, CSM, LSS GB

Can you name a person who has had a tremendous impact on you as a leader? Maybe someone who has been a mentor to you?

My papa (grandfather) is someone who has always been a leader to our entire family, as well as a mentor to me, especially being the eldest grandson. He has been there since day one, teaching me a strong work ethic, how to be handy around the house, how to work on cars, keeping his promises, showing up to all of the important events in my life, as well as all of his children’s and other grandchildren, what it means to be a contributor in the community. He demonstrates the responsibilities of a father and family member with his honest and caring ways, for all people. He is by far my best friend in life and has always been there even when I did not know I needed him there.

What are the most important decisions you make as a leader of your organization?

The intentional decision to treat all team members equally; they are all an impactful part of our team. On a daily basis, I choose to represent myself and our team as honest, accountable, and encouraging to all other colleagues and clients.

As an organization gets larger there can be a tendency for the “institution” to dampen the “inspiration.” How do you keep this from happening?

At Unleashing Leaders we are surrounded by leaders who encourage us all to stay curious and run after our goals and dreams. I keep this from happening by the continued pursuit of my goals, by keeping myself on my toes. I stay motivated because every day is different and initiates further motivation to reach those goals.

How do you encourage creative thinking within your organization?

I make sure to ask others questions that help us all explore possibilities we may have never expressed. I encourage team members to think outside the box and share the sentiment that no idea is a bad idea, but there are a bunch of “best option” ideas.

Where do the great ideas come from in your organization?

Let’s be honest, our core leadership team rocks! They come up with amazing ideas and futuristic options so that we are always headed on the path that is best for us as an organization. They also allow all team members to express their thoughts and ideas; seeking input on what could benefit the company, as well as the people impacted by the level of service we provide.

Which is most important to your organization—mission, core values or vision?

Our fierce core values! Those consist of: Freedom, Integrity, Engagement, Resilience, Curiosity, and Excellence. In living out the core values, the team supports each other and the clients we serve. We all value each one of these values and are in tune with how we use them every day.

How do you or other leaders in your organization communicate the core values?

I communicate the core values by my everyday activities. I express my Curiosity directly to our leadership by letting them know I am interested in various training and certifications that will benefit myself, the organization, and our clients I serve. I express my Freedom by allowing myself to work outside of the normal 8-5 schedule, or working on projects that are outside of my usual scope.

How do you encourage others in your organization to communicate the “core values?”

I encourage them by continuously reminding them to go after their goals and dreams and to never be hesitant in expressing what matters to them. Our core values go beyond the work life, they are immersed in our personal lives, within our families and communities. It is very important to me that I stay active in my community and lead by example, offering mentorship to the next generation.

What is one characteristic that you believe every leader should possess?

The ability to listen and empathize. Each individual in the company and in this world has a unique life and situation. When our leaders are able to listen to our unique backgrounds and situations, we are able to all unite and achieve so much more together.

What are a few resources you would recommend to someone looking to gain insight into becoming a better leader?

Unleashing Leaders has an amazing educational platform that assists leaders into achieving higher leadership skills. Lee Scott will walk and talk you through the fundamentals of a leader, all the way to what it means to be a top leader of your organization. You can find that here: https://unleashingleaders.teachable.com/

What advice would you give someone going into a leadership position for the first time?

Be mindful of all employees. Not just the higher ranked staff, but everyone. The respect and outlook from all staff is important and will only increase productivity from individuals and teams within your organization.

What are you doing to ensure you continue to grow and develop as a leader?

I continue to surround myself with amazing mentors who are all leaders in their organization, communities, family, etc. I also enjoy reading and watching educational videos on what is happening in the world and business, and how the best leaders are able to make the most out of every situation. I love meeting new people, every single day. In every interaction, I act with honor and integrity, every introduction is an interview!
